“Free Gaza” Spell Tutorial

Myself, like many people, are overwhelmed with the footage of a years-long attack on every beautiful life in Palestine. We talk about it on social media, we donate, we fund raise, and it feels like we still want to do more. That is where magic can play a powerful role. Ritual not only offers a container for our collective grief, but it directs our energy, pointing it at the evil that makes this world so heavy to live in right now.

I will be the first to tell you, the only spell ingredients you truly need are your intention and focus. everything else is optional. Don’t have access to a candle? an LED one from the dollar tree is just fine. Don’t have money for a specific size? That’s okay. tea lights, birthday candles, tapers, they all work. Truly, all you need is your intention and focus. Let’s start by defining those and illustrating what that could mean.

As a clairvoyant psychic, I see things from the spirit realm. I have the job of sharing with others what I see, hear and feel, that they may not pick up on. However, I’m here to tell you, that anyone with intention, and focus, can do what I do. An intention is just what you want out of this spell. Make it specific as you’d like, and make it as personal as you’d like. some examples could be:

Then your focus, is just what you would do when you meditate. I know that word can intimidate some people, but when you break it down, it’s just about breathing. In, and out. and doing that over and over. When you think, you stop breathing. Quick whats 72 X 157? The first thing you do, when you look at that problem, is hold your breath. So when we focus, we just focus on inhale and exhale, repeat. If you have a thought, that’s allowed, but don’t get caught in it.

Putting the two together, your spell for Gaza may look like this. Your intention: Protect Palestine. You sit on your couch, or on your porch, or lay on your bed. Eyes open, or eyes closed. Then you breathe in, thinking, “Protect Palestine” breathing out, “Protect Palestine,” almost like a mantra. Stepping it up, you can also write your intention down, and hold the paper over your heart space while you breathe. Do it as long as it feels right, 2 minutes, five minutes. Simple right?

Now if you are drawn to something more ritualistic, or you have the privilege of having some tools to perform spells, I’ve got some ways to add to this spell. First, clear a bit of space to make the spell, and wipe the dust or crumbs off the space, then cleanse it with incense or a bell chime. Make sure your hands are clean. Trake a candle, whatever you have, and write in the wax, (or on a paper if it’s an LED), what your intention is. You can use a ballpoint pen, or pencil, just make sure to remove the wax once you’re done. I like to add protective oil (like this one from Keven Craft Ritual) and an High Above Low Below oil (sold here). The first one offers, you guessed it, protection. The other one offers several things, it’s a very useful blend, but I use it here for a balance and a calling in of the elements. For whimsy, because I do need to hold myself to Gay Standards as a queer psychic, I add a bit of gold mica dust. When you rub these ingredients on your etched candle, you’ll have messy hands, but the candle will look spectacular. with clean hands, light the bottom of your candle gently until you get a couple of drops of wax on the plate (any saucer, foil covered or not, is fine), then stick the candle to the plate. Fun trick, isn’t it?

If you have “LED candle F.O.M.O. (fear of missing out),” you can dress the paper you’ve written your intention on. Sure, dabbing some oil and glitter on the paper is an option, but you can add stickers, doodles and stamps to your paper also. Once that is ready, turn on your candle, set it so the corner of the paper with your intention is under the candle, and focus on your breath, repeating your intention like a mantra.

You can leave your wax candle as is, dressed and adhered to the burn-safe surface, or, we can bump it up a notch again, this time with salt and plants. Black salt (salt plus charcoal) is a great choice for this spell, because it is protective and cleansing. But any salt is great, and put that in a ring around your candle, toward the outside. Then in a second circle you have some options. I chose Rose petals (purchased here) for love, calendula (from Keven Craft Rituals) for softness and light, and a salt and oil infused Passage blend (sold here), for an easy passage toward peace. If you have lavender and rosemary, that’s great too. Do what feels right. If you don’t know the “meaning” of an herb, give it a job of its own, I promise its just that easy.

Once your candle is lit, gaze at the flame for a while. Use this time to energetically send your love to Gaza, Hold up your hands toward the flame and imagine love and peace shooting through your palms, straight into the hearts of everyone involved. Know, that even if you don’t have much time to spend with your beautiful creating, every second of reading about this spell, gathering the ingredients, and making it counted as energy directed toward a more hopeful, brighter and peaceful place. Be sure to sit with your candle until completion, and if you are ADD timeblind like me, and you cannot finish watching your candle, set it in your bathtub or outside (away from anything burnable) while you rush to make your work shift. Please use common sense and your best judgement. Once it’s over, release everything, knowing you completely made a difference for our friends in Palestine.

If you enjoyed doing this, you may have found a great container for your grief. Consider repeating monthly, inviting your loved ones to join if that feels right. And be gentle on yourself. Sometimes showing up fully is fully decking out a spell candle, and sometimes showing up fully is taking 10 conscious breaths, focusing on peace. You got this. And if you ever need someone to walk you through this in person, I offer mentoring. Book a time with me on calendly
